Extracorporeal Radial Shockwave Therapy is a series of high-energy impulses to the affected area.
Shockwave therapy uses a specialist device to deliver acoustic energy through the skin to the injured part of the body. The shockwaves are mechanical and not electric, but are audible, low-energy sound waves. They produces an inflammatory response in the tissues, to which the body responds by increasing metabolic activity around the site of pain/injury. This stimulates and accelerates the healing process as well as decreasing pain modulating neurotransmitters.
Shockwave therapy stimulates the body's natural healing process and there is normally an immediate reduction of pain and improvement in movement/mobility. Shockwave therapy may also reduce the need of further surgery.
Scientific research states that 3 to 5 treatments are necessary at weekly intervals, however additional treatments may be recommended by your practitioner depending on how severe or chronic your problem is.
You might feel a bit of discomfort or pain depending on the severity of the problem, but the settings can be adjusted to make it easier.
The shockwave will trigger an inflammatory response, so for this reason, we recommend not to use anti-inflammatory medications. We'd also suggest not using ice either as we want our bodies to trigger the natural healing response. The pain should subside within 24 hours. If you are concerned, please contact us directly for advice.
Even if it feels good, we would advise you to take it easy, rest.
At your initial assessment we will identify the underlying cause of your injury and whether your injury or condition is appropriate for shockwave therapy treatment. Despite its effectiveness for the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions we do not advise it is used:
